Clockwork Princess (Infernal Devices #3)

18335634Danger and betrayal, secrets and enchantment in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal Devices trilogy.

Tessa Gray should be happy – aren't all brides happy? Yet as she prepares for her wedding, a net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute.

A new demon appears, one linked by blood and secrecy to Mortmain, the man who plans to use his army of pitiless automatons, the Infernal Devices, to destroy the Shadowhunters. Mortmain needs only one last item to complete his plan. He needs Tessa. And Jem and Will, the boys who lay equal claim to Tessa's heart, will do anything to save her.

*May Contain Spoilers*

The epic finish to the Infernal Devices trilogy is a whirlwind of sacrifice and worry, death and the threat of destruction. But would we expect anything else from Cassandra Clare? Clockwork Princess is the chilling end to the prequel series, and thank goodness there's more in the form of Mortal Instruments

Tessa Gray will forever be a daring heroine (and not only because she's immortal). When she's kidnapped by Mortmain, the Magister, the Institute must convince the Clave that she needs to be rescued as she will be his biggest weapon against the Shadowhunters. Readers finally see the warrior inside of Tessa, the woman who would sacrifice anything and everything to keep the ones she loves safe. The connection formed in the first two novels will solidify in this third installment.

And not only with the lovely Miss Gray. The fate of both Jem and Will are decided and revealed in Clockwork Princess. There will be unabashed happiness and unstoppable tears. Readers will revel in the words of Clare as the fate of the Infernal trio comes to light.

The plot follows Tessa and Jem's plans to be married along with her kidnapping by Mortmain. Then when the Clave refuses to help, readers are witness to hell in the form of demon-infested automatons. Everything is nicely wrapped up without a single loose thread, that I could see, presenting readers with the ultimate end of the series. Some ties will cause sadness, others happiness. But still, we'll all wish for more.

All That Glitters

18523167The town of Wickerwire, Iowa has become the target of a jewelry thief with the ability to get by completely undetected. The only trace he leaves behind is candy in place of what he steals. The media gives him the nickname "The Candy Caper" after this calling card. He won't give up until he finds an item believed to be blessed with ancient magic...unless someone else gets in his way.

*May Contain Spoilers*

Jackie Sonnenberg shares the story of a jewelry thief who is only looking for one ancient item in her novel, All That Glitters. When Nick Allen was a child, he was diagnosed with Kleptomania. Now as an adult, he struggles to control it, often losing against his urge. But it has come to his attention that there is an ancient magic in an unidentifiable piece of jewelry that helps the person who has it with overcoming their problems. Now he's on the hunt to find this invaluable piece that will allow him to stop his uncontrollable urge to steal, by robbing jewelry stores until he finds it.

Nick Allen is the main character and the jewelry thief. By day, he works as a dentist and by night he is, what the newspapers have dubbed him, the Candy Caper. An ironic twist by Sonnenberg that Nick leaves candy in place of what he steals. Everyone knows dentists don't enjoy candy. Though his background information is scarce, almost as if he has no past, character traits can be picked up through context clues. Nick is a very nervous man, incredibly self-conscious, and shy. He has trouble talking to people, even those he calls friends because Nick's always afraid that someone will find out his Kleptomaniac-secret. Though he knows it's wrong, stealing jewelry makes him feel invincible. Nick is able to put on the mask and be someone who isn't scared of what he is. Though I feel readers will have trouble forming a strong connection with Nick, there will be an air of intrigue and interest that will help readers enjoy the story.

All That Glitters focuses on Nick as the Candy Caper and his ambition to find the ancient piece of jewelry that will solve his problem. Readers watch as Nick avoids the cops, plans his next heist, and falls for a jewelry store owner. While this is occurring, there is another character, an absolute jinx, who is also looking for the ancient piece to wear as a lucky charm. Though the plot is very intriguing, I think the character connections could be a lot stronger. I would have liked a deeper look into the past of Nick, the jinx, and especially the store owner that steals the Candy Caper's heart.

Clockwork Prince (Infernal Devices #2)

10025305In magical Victorian London, orphan Tessa found safety with the Shadowhunters, until traitors betray her to the Magister. He wants to marry her, but so do self-destructive Will and fiercely devoted Jem. Mage Magnus Bane returns to help them. Secrets to her parentage lie with the mist-shrouded Yorkshire Institute's aged manager Alyosius Starkweather.

*May Contain Spoilers*

The Infernal Devices trilogy by Cassandra Clare continues with Clockwork Prince. Picking up right where Clockwork Angel left off, the Shadowhunters and the Clave are looking for the Magister. But someone in the Clave might be under his mechanical eye, helping him at every turn. And what of the Institute? Could their be another traitor among them?

Tessa is still the main focus in this novel, as the Magister is still after her and the reason still a mystery, though the Shadowhunters seem to be making progress on this front. Readers solidify the initial connection made in Clockwork Angel. More of her heart is exposed as she falls in love with both Will and Jem for many different reasons. Readers come to understand more of what makes her tick (pun intended) when she agrees to marry Jem. Her friendship blossoms with Sophie, revealing just how loyal Tessa can be. Throughout the story, she still struggles to discover where she came from and what she is exactly.

Readers also get a deeper look into Will's character in this novel. It's revealed that he was cursed as a young child with the understanding that anyone who comes to love him will die. In the background, Will and Magnus Bane try to uncover the demon who cursed Will in effort to reverse the evil affliction. Readers are more able to connect with Will when this is discovered because they now understand his reasoning behind pushing people away and playing a villainous role.

The plot of the novel is played out under a restraint from the Shadowhunter Clave: Charlotte and Henry have two weeks to track down the Magister or they forfeit their ruling positions at the London Institute. This ultimatum for the characters will undoubtedly hook the readers, as they continue in their Magister Mystery. Clare's wonderful storytelling and writing style make this book one of pure enjoyment, even if Tessa doesn't end up with the reader's hero of choice.

Death Never Sleeps

18123455Veteran Homicide Detective James "Big Jim" Donegan and his partner, Detective Chris Hunter, have been called to scene of their latest case, a strangled call girl who has been put halfway through a wood chipper that was left unattended in one of the city's parks.

*May Contain Spoilers

David Grace gives fans a crime thriller with meaningful coincidence, intriguing connections, and unusual leads in his novel, Death Never Sleeps. When James and Chris are handed the case, it turns out the killer isn't the only mystery they'll be solving.

James, "Big Jim," is the father figure of the Murder Crimes Unit. He informally adopted Chris at a young age and raised him with rules to live by. Big Jim is the detective who gives second chances, even to the most unwarranted suspect. Readers will enjoy his gut feelings, his belief that coincidences don't exist, and the nature in which he handles both suspects and witnesses.

Chris is the complete opposite of Big Jim but that doesn't stop him from trying to emulate his role model. Chris would rather write computer programs and formulate plans than speak to a witness; facts in lieu of faces. As a character, he's completely lost when it comes to people. He struggles with connecting and understanding others. Readers will laugh at the jokes Chris doesn't get and like him that much more for it.

The plot of Death Never Sleeps brings readers into the murder investigation of an escort, which somehow connects to another murder, this time a school principal. As Big Jim and Chris whittle their way through the facts, lack of evidence, and criminal procedures, readers will be intrigued and entertained by the two main characters.

Clockwork Angel (Infernal Devices #1)

7171637In a time when Shadowhunters are barely winning the fight against the forces of darkness, one battle will change the course of history forever. Welcome to the Infernal Devices trilogy, a stunning and dangerous prequel to the New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments series.

The year is 1878. Tessa Gray descends into London’s dark supernatural underworld in search of her missing brother. She soon discovers that her only allies are the demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she is attracted to. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork creatures, the Club is out to rule the British Empire, and only Tessa and her allies can stop them...

*May Contain Spoilers*

Cassandra Clare introduces the world of Shadowhunters with her novel, Clockwork Angel. When one woman is kidnapped and introduced to her ability to Change into other people, she discovers there is much more darkness to the world than she could have ever imagined.

Tessa Gray is the main character of this historically supernatural novel. Readers will enjoy her taking the lead to save her brother and help the Shadowhunters in any way she can to keep the people of London safe. Though she isn't a fighter, Tessa is courageous, brave, and focused. She is loyal to her brother and tries to ensure that she pulls her weight in this Institute against evil. Readers will connect with Tessa through her journey to discover herself. With this new knowledge that she is supernatural, Tessa struggles to define who she is, a universal plight.

The plot follows Tessa's arrival in London to the finding of her brother. Along the way, she learns of her ability, is tortured, rescued, introduced to the underworld of London, and helps fight off the Pandemonium Club. The story is created with a blunt writing style and wonderfully sarcastic dialogue. Readers will definitely enjoy the action, the mystery, and the sword-sharp wit of the character cast.

Platform 21 - Blog Tour

Synopsis:
Luke’s life is about to take a dangerous turn.
But first he has to die.

In the year 2052, high school sophomore Luke Gibson considers himself an average teenager in a world on the brink of monumental change. Joining his parents and sister, Laura, at the first World Energy Initiative Conference, he is among thousands gathered in a Denver arena to celebrate free renewable energy when a massive earthquake strikes killing everyone in the stadium. The last thing Luke sees before his death is a girl reaching out to him—a stranger whose face he remembers from his dreams.

The end, however, is not the end. Suddenly, inexplicably, Luke is back home in Ohio and everything is different. His sister is gone, the victim in an unsolved homicide years before. Angela, his mysterious dream girl, is here also, and the only person besides Luke who recalls the previous reality. And now their determination to uncover the truth about Laura’s murder and their transformed world is making them targets—forced to flee for their lives from a nameless shadow organization and a government seeking vengeance for an unthinkable act of terror—as they stand on the threshold of a dark conspiracy that threatens all humankind.

19112416Review:
T.R. Patrick combines global crisis and murder with his novel, Platform 21, the first in his Beyond the Veil series. As the world turns to chaos after a terrorist attack killing thousands, Luke awakens from death to find a new life awaiting him. A life in which his sister was brutally murdered and the criminal never caught. With the need to decipher his sister's death, Luke and Angela join forces when they discover they both survived the terrorist attack. Though, now that they're alive, the government seems to want to place the blame on their teenage shoulders.

Though Luke tells most of the story from his point of view, both he and Angela are the main characters. Readers will enjoy Luke's unwavering fortitude. He's intelligent, loyal, brave, and a little superhuman. He perseveres through every obstacle the government throws at him, uncovering connections to his sister's death that is ultimately the key to the global conspiracy.

Angela is the perfect partner for Luke. She's incredibly strong, both physically and emotionally. Angela is the character readers will cheer for. As she survives death during the terrorist attack, losing her best friend, falling in love, being abused, and being declared treasonous, Angela keeps her strength. Though readers will connect with Luke, Angela is the one readers will form an unbreakable bond with.

The plot of Platform 21 is a creatively chaotic layering of interwoven mysteries. While the terrorist attack is the push-off point of the novel, the murder mystery that comes after is the real focus. The mystery unravels to reveal multiple (seemingly) unrelated deaths which don't add up to equal the global conspiracy. It's an intricate plot that doesn't seem to come together until the very end. Though, the confusion is worth the wait as the novel reaches its climax and the series-plot is actually unveiled.

After his time in the Navy, Tim became a Test Engineer working for companies like Scientific Research Corporation and Hewlett Packard. During this phase of his life he moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he bought a home and tried to settle into the American Dream.
