Curse Me Not

23903068Southern unsophisticate Elzetta Swan recently gained the ability to see auras and the more lucrative ability to clean revenge curses from those auras. Embracing the gift faster than grass through a goose, she’s about to finish her first year as a licensed "bodywasher" with a trendy new lifestyle and a countrified inner child that’s skipping all the way to the bank.

Suddenly a routine cleansing turns ugly, leaving Elzetta to suspect a professional invoker has come to town — one who’s hooked on the rush of setting particularly nasty curses. If that wasn’t bad enough, the invoker may be visiting at the invitation of a mysterious local with a malicious hard-on for revenge.

As Elzetta attempts to track down the invoker as well as the source of rage feeding the invoker’s addiction, she must confront threats to both her new life and the hallelujah hankering she’s formed for the reluctant — and way too sexy — urban white knight who has crossed her path. Will those confrontations end up creating in Elzetta a vengeful rage all her own?

*May Contain Spoilers*

Elizabeth Fisher writes a fun and mysterious Southern tale of what happens when revenge can be served a curse, as long as the money's there, in her novel Curse Me Not. In the book, the world is aware of auras, curses, and what that entails. There are even laws against invoking a curse and praise for bodywashers, who are the only ones with the ability to erase them.

Elzetta Swan is Knoxville, Tennessee's resident bodywasher. Menopausal Miss Swan is a skilled aura cleanser, though she only has one year of experience. With her sassy nature and open heart, readers will love her. She's a very giving character who enjoys helping people rid their auras of curses. She also likes the chic lifestyle it allows her to have after growing up in a small town broker than broke. Elzetta is a little indulgent and she can even be slightly judgmental, but those qualities help her seem realistic to readers. The honest character qualities will further help readers connect with Elzetta.

The plot is intriguing from the word 'go.' After Elzetta discovers that a major curse invoker is in town, she runs to the police wanting to help them stop the criminal. This leads to her meeting Cal, sexy police detective. As they try to track down the elusive Claude Book, they stumble into bed together. Things get a bit complicated from here, but it's amusing, fun, and the focus on the bad guy isn't lost in the lust, which is always a good thing. I was a bit disappointed in the ending, however. Fisher leaves it a open for a bit of reader interpretation/decision making as to the relationship with Cal and Elzetta, as well as the after-effects of the major curse on another character's family. The way characters react after the story is just as important as how they act during it -- both reveal a lot about their personalities. I feel like another chapter would have helped me solidify the character relationships that had formed throughout the novel, but instead I'm left with a feeling of uncertainty.

It might have been a long time since I'd gone to bed afraid of the bogeyman, but that night thoughts of a real one being out there somewhere haunted me.

And there was no chalking those fears up to a child's imagination.

Polarity in Motion: Blog Tour

23120782
Fifteen-year-old Polarity Weeks just wants to live a normal life, but with a mother diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, that’s rarely easy. Her life gets exponentially more disastrous when her sixth-period history classmates start ogling a nude picture of her on the Internet. Polarity would never have struck such a shameless pose, but the photo is definitely of her, and she’s at a complete loss to explain its existence.

Child Protective Services yanks her from her home, suspecting her parents. The kids at school mock her, assuming she took it herself. And Ethan, the boy she was really starting to like, backpedals and joins the taunting chorus. Surrounded by disbelief and derision on all sides, Polarity desperately seeks the truth among her friends. Only then does she learn that everyone has dark secrets, and no one’s life is anywhere near normal.

Review:
Brenda Vicars explores the hardships of mental illness, adolescence, and bullying in her novel, Polarity in Motion. Covering an array of genres, this book will reach out to multiple audiences. Coupled with the mysterious nature of the plot, the relationships between characters are intriguing and unsteady which add to the believable and realistic narrative.

Polarity Weeks is a girl on the cusp of adolescence as a ninth-grade student, but she's aged with experience. Her mother has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder and is subject to jarring mood swings. Though Polarity understands her mother's condition to the best of her ability, her interactions with her mother often resemble strolling through a mine field. The understanding nature of readers will allow them to immediately connect with Polarity, especially if they have a similar experience with mental illness.

Polarity, though young, is a brave and trustworthy soul. When the nude photograph is displayed in a computer class, readers will have various reactions. My first thought was that Polarity had some sort of mental illness of her own that had yet to be discovered. Other readers may believe that it was a production of Photoshop. Regardless, the openness and goodhearted nature of Polarity will at least have readers leaning toward an innocent ruling. As the book continues, readers will want the mystery solved almost as much as Polarity does herself.

Vicars portrays bullying in an accurate fashion and readers will side with Polarity upon witnessing the mean and hurtful actions that her peers commit. This only strengthens the connection between Polarity and the readers, whether they have been in a similar situation or not. The supporting characters in the novel are divided between those who support Polarity and those who do not, with her mother straddling the fence. The only way to further connect with Polarity would have been for readers to witness the photograph being taken without having knowledge of the fact. Knowing at the beginning that her innocence was not in question could have allowed me to connect with Polarity on a deeper level. I would have felt like fighting with her against the onslaught of disbelief instead of holding back and internally questioning whether I truly thought she was guilty or innocent.

Polarity in Motion begins with the mass sharing of the nude photo of Polarity and follows the investigation of her parents, classmates, and friends. At times the plot moves slowly, as does the investigation to find out the truth. Through the whole ordeal, readers come to know Polarity, her future goals, her family, and her feelings. They also witness her grow from a young girl to a young woman who has strength and confidence in herself and her abilities. Stemming from a negative situation is a real coming of age story that many readers will relate to and learn from. Polarity in Motion tackles some big issues and Vicars takes a chance with the plot's controversial situations, but a story like this can open eyes.

City of Heavenly Fire (Mortal Instruments #6)

8755785In this dazzling and long-awaited conclusion to the acclaimed Mortal Instruments series, Clary and her friends fight the greatest evil they have ever faced: Clary's own brother.

Sebastian Morgenstern is on the move, systematically turning Shadowhunter against Shadowhunter. Bearing the Infernal Cup, he transforms Shadowhunters into creatures out of nightmare, tearing apart families and lovers as the ranks of his Endarkened army swell.

The embattled Shadowhunters withdraw to Idris - but not even the famed demon towers of Alicante can keep Sebastian at bay. And with the Nephilim trapped in Idris, who will guard the world against demons?

When one of the greatest betrayals the Nephilim have ever known is revealed, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, Simon, and Alec must flee - even if their journey takes them deep into the demon realms, where no Shadowhunter has set foot before, and from which no human being has ever returned...

Love will be sacrificed and lives lost in the terrible battle for the fate of the word in the thrilling final installment of the classic urban fantasy series The Mortal Instruments!

*May Contain Spoilers*

Let me begin by saying, that I am saddened that this is the final book in The Mortal Instruments series. However, there are more Shadowhunter novels being penned and printed for future enjoyment. So that makes it better. Now, I waited quite a while to get to this point and I must say that I thoroughly loved this final book. Cassandra Clare gives readers hope for their favorite Shadowhunters as they attempt to defeat Sebastian in the Dark War, with no idea how to stop him, in City of Heavenly Fire.

The novel opens with Sebastian turning Shadowhunters into members of his Endarkened Army with the Infernal Cup. Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn (along with siblings) escape and warn the Clave. This introduces the future main characters of The Dark Artifices series.

Sebastian wants Clary to rule by his side and he'll burn down the entire world with his stolen army to make it happen. As the Clave tries to determine how they can defeat an enemy that cannot die by the hand of any weapon forged under heaven, Sebastian murders his was to Alicante. And then his allies kidnap all of the Downworlder representatives: Magnus, Luke, Jocelyn, Raphael, and Meliorn. However, Sebastian offers a misshapen form of mercy to the Clave. If they turn over Clary and Jace, then everything ends. And of course, with a little insider information, the gang decides to take matters into their own hands and travel to the demon world where they believe Sebastian is hiding.

The relationships between readers and these characters have been tested and built over the years of the series. Clary has only become braver and more courageous as the books continue. Jace has become more loving, more open, and much more stubborn. Alec and Isabelle both blossomed into likeable characters. And Simon, my favorite character, turned into a hero. When the fate of the world is hanging in the balance, these rowdy yet reliable Shadowhunters are the only ones clever and gutsy enough to attempt to win. With consequences of course.

Snatched

23533076When Kara was ten, the shifters took her parents.

A year ago, they took her best friend Hunter.

And now, the night before her first military strike against those monsters on the surface, the shifters take the only person she has left: her little sister Lizzy.

The snatched don’t come back. That’s what Kara’s believed her entire life, but the first person she finds above ground is the best friend she thought lost forever. Turns out, the higher ups lied. Other colonies are out there, hell even folks who toughed it up above. If anyone knows how to get her sister back, these people would. However, unless she can rally these surfacers into an army, one girl with a shotgun won’t survive long against the very creatures that overturned her world.

*May Contain Spoilers*

Monsters roam the surface of the Earth, killing and capturing any humans they come across. With bodies that seem indestructible and the ability to teleport, they rule while the citizens of this planet hide underground. Katherine McIntyre shares this horrifying world with readers in her novel, Snatched

Kara, the main character, is an Orris girl - strong, sarcastic, and full of gumption. She's a seventeen year old military member who has just completed her first mission on the surface. Kara is an incredibly brave and serious soldier. Her focus is keeping her little sister safe. Especially since Lizzy is the only family she has left. Readers will connect with Kara through the book's point of view. Because everything focuses around Kara, readers will witness what Kara is fighting for. When Lizzy is snatched by the monster shifters, Kara is determined to do whatever it takes to get her little sister home safely. Her courage and loyalty play the biggest role in helping readers relate to Kara.

The plot of the novel begins with Kara's first mission during which a shifter is spotted. Because of the sighting, another mission is immediately formed. Just before leaving for the mission, Lizzy is captured by the shifters. Kara keeps the news to herself and goes on the mission knowing that she'll find a way to track down, and save, her sister. Snatched is pretty fast-paced with the characters barely getting a moment of rest, though I felt like the timeline described in the novel didn't match up a few times. The writing style is horrifyingly detailed, especially the monster fighting sections, but became a bit repetitive. I felt like I was re-reading sentences every once in a while. Regardless, the book was absorbing. McIntyre does a good job creating a believable dystopian setting for the survive-and-rescue plot.

   - Katherine McIntyre

Our higher-ups had always told us that the shifters snatched us to thin our ranks, that they'd port us to the surface and drop us from the skies. But that shifter and the one who'd attacked me had been intent on keeping us whole.
