Tuned Into You - Blog Tour

Tuned Into You by Cindy Dorminy is available NOW! To celebrate, Cindy has put together a very cool swag pack, so stay tuned for more information on that! For now, let's talk Tuned...

About Tuned Into You

A summer party is the last place Lydia Flowers wants to be. Beer pong? Stupid, foot-wrecking shoes? Random hookups? No thanks. Lydia would rather be in her cleats practicing her bat handling skills.

Enter Abe Fischer, the Nashville Teen Idol superstar. He’s a lip-syncing party animal with a short fuse; or at least that’s what the tabloids say. Except, Abe turns out to be nothing like the guy Lydia’s read about online. He’s sweet, and the way he talks to his horse…sigh.

Then life throws Lydia and Abe a curveball. They are wrongfully arrested for destruction of property. Their choices? Either work on the Fischer Farm for the summer earning nothing more than blisters and a sunburn, or have the arrest go on their records, which would ruin Lydia’s shot at a softball scholarship. It’s a no-brainer. Lydia picks up a pitchfork, pulls out the SPF 40, and prepares for the worst two months of her life.

When the press gets wind of a big secret Abe’s family has been keeping, things become even more complicated. Now Lydia has another choice to make: stick around for Abe’s messed-up life in the spotlight, or go for the scholarship of her dreams.

Review
*May Contain Spoilers*

Cindy Dorminy introduces young adult readers to her novelly famous musician, Abe Fischer, in her novel Tuned Into You. He's labelled as the new bad boy of country music and is selling records like hot cakes while making the front cover of every tabloid. And he hates it, but has no clue how to change it. Except for, maybe, a summer at home, where he meets Miss Lydia Flowers.

Abe and Lydia are the two main characters of this book and they take turns telling the story. Each chapter is labelled with one of their names, as readers experience the thoughts and feelings of both of them. This gives the readers a chance to connect with each on different levels all while meeting in the middle. Abe is a pretty typical teenage boy with an atypical job. Being a famous musician at seventeen makes Abe's life pretty hard. He struggles to balance being a kid while maintaining an adult career. He also deeply struggles with his family life. Readers will definitely sympathize with Abe over his father's disapproving attitude and his loneliness. Overall, Abe is a sweet kid, but he does make some stupid mistakes when it comes to his love life. I'm sure a lot of readers will feel whiplash after he breaks up with Lydia before they even start their relationship.

Lydia Flowers is the daughter of a pastor and a lawyer and has four siblings. She comes from a family that's full of love. Lydia dreams of playing softball for the University of Georgia and has kept her head on straight for the most part. She knows where she wants to go in life and it's commendable. Readers will like Lydia's feisty attitude and loving personality. Readers will connect with both characters as they witness them falling in love for the first time in their lives. It's cute, a little sappy, but sweet combined with teenage betrayal, scary choices, and uncertainty.

The plot begins with Lydia and Abe officially meeting and getting arrested together. Lydia was at the wrong place at the wrong time, while Abe was misinformed by his best friend about the size of a "little" get together. As punishment, they have to work together on the Fischer farm everyday for no pay. But for these two teenagers, that punishment becomes paradise as their relationship blooms. However, every summer has storms. Namely, Neil Storm who keeps showing up at random places making rumors surge about Abe and his family. With all the stress, the relationship Lydia and Abe have started building suddenly becomes rocky.

Tuned Into You is a young adult novel that addresses teenage choices, family lies, and self-definition. Dorminy wraps all the tough topics into her story, reaching and connecting with her audience. The writing style is definitely for young adult readers, full of hope, teenage insults, and some adult language.

Rating: 3/5 Cups

The Grapes of Wrath

18114322First published in 1939, Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize winning epic of the Great Depression chronicles the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s and tells the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads, driven from their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into haves and have-nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision, elemental yet plainspoken, tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity.

A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless, of one man’s fierce reaction to injustice, and of one woman’s stoical strength, the novel captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes the very nature of equality and justice in America.

*May Contain Spoilers*

John Steinbeck has always been known to me as a fantastic writer. He won the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for goodness sake. It's obvious that his work will be canonized forever. But admittedly, I had never read The Grapes of Wrath until this past week. I've been doing research on Steinbeck for the past few weeks for a paper I'm working on and well, I did not expect such a harrowing tale of family love, loyalty, and most of all -- loss.

The Joad family makes up the main characters of this novel. Ma, Pa, Tom, Al, Rose of Sharon, Winfield, Noah, and Ruthie. Readers will be able to connect with every character on various levels, but I think the connection with Ma, Tom, and Rose of Sharon will be the strongest.

Mama Joad is an impressive woman. She can make supper with nothing, argue with the men til they think she's right, and keep the family together (for the most part). She's a very strong character, mentally and emotionally. I don't know how she kept her wits about her with all of the stress she was under. I suppose that's just how mother's had to be. They didn't have time to dwell on the bad. And the bad piles up high in this novel.

Tom Joad is the favorite son of the Joad family. At the beginning of the novel, Tom has just been released early from prison for good behavior, which I didn't know was possible for murder. But there is the sense of self-defense implied. Tom's love for his family is obvious and his loyalty is strong. He hardly ever complains about the situation, and tries to find ways to work hard and help his family. He jokes around with his brothers and is doted on by his mother. His interaction with other characters shows readers how amiable Tom is.

Rose of Sharon is the pregnant sister of the Joad family. She is a bit of dreamer -- hoping her and her fiance, Connie, will end up with a house of their own and a great job opportunity. Her situation will draw sympathy from readers when Connie disappears, leaving Rose of Sharon feeling lost and alone. As she realizes that Connie isn't coming back, readers will feel pity and empathy for her character. Her sickness reinforces these feelings. The death of her baby will shock and sadden readers as they see how much Rose of Sharon's gone through only to lose. Her character goes through the most turmoil and at the very end of the novel, she still manages to help someone even less fortunate than herself.

The plot of The Grapes of Wrath follows the Joad family across the United States from Oklahoma to California. They're kicked off their own land and forced to move to California, where there are empty promises of work and land. Steinbeck used this book as a social commentary on the labor issue in the 1930s, as he did other novels. The power of this novel is unbelievable, from his word choice to his writing style, Steinbeck impacts readers deeply. Fantastic and horrifying novel of the struggle between man and business.

In Dubious Battle

609482'This book is brutal. I wanted to be merely a recording consciousness,' Steinbeck said of In Dubious Battle, which aroused immense controversy when first published in 1936. It follows the fortunes of Jim Nolan, disenfranchised and alone, his family destroyed by the system. Desperate to find his place in the world, Jim joins the Communist Party and becomes entangled in a strike of migrant workers which spirals out of control, unflinchingly detailing the apocalyptic violence that breaks out when the masses become the mob. This fast-paced, compelling novel is at once a brilliant observation of social and political turmoil and a moving story of a young man's struggle for identity. In Dubious Battle explores and dramatises many of the ideas and themes key to Steinbeck's writing.

*May Contain Spoilers*

In Dubious Battle is a book I had never heard of before I started doing research on John Steinbeck. I've heard of his most popular titles, even read a couple in high school, but not this one. Which is surprising because it is a powerful book. John Steinbeck tells a story, shares a culture, inspires readers, and lets them see the consequences.

Jim is the main character of this minefield novel. He's young, feeling lost and lonely, searching for something to be a part of. A lot of readers will be able to relate to this feeling and understand why Jim joins the red party, even though it's obvious it's going to brew up trouble. As the book goes along and the strike grows more and more threatening, Jim grows as well. He wants to be used for something important, but his partner Mac doesn't think he's ready. Jim stirs the pot and hopes for a chance to do something big, and he gets exactly that in the cruelest and saddest way possible.

In Dubious Battle begins with Jim quitting his job and leaving his rented room to become a party member. Mac brings him on and takes him to his first assignment. Apple Orchards in Torgas Valley dropped the wages of their pickers and Mac believes they can be convinced to strike. Reading how manipulative Mac is and how they convince the workers to strike is incredibly interesting. How a little twist of the truth can motivate a man to fight back. Steinbeck wanted to analyze the social consciousness of this movement and he did. Underneath the nice words and supportive personality, Mac is a viper who uses everyone and anyone to keep the chaos churning. And readers see what happens to an innocent man, who doesn't have anything or anyone, when he gets involved thinking he can help only to be twisted like a key to open the next door. It's tragic and powerful.

Above the Flames

28940574Jasmine’s sixteenth birthday was the worst ever…

All in one day, her dad died, she met a demon, and her mother rejected her existence forever. After all, the demon who killed her dad was there to take her, and all because of her stupid powers—the ability to conjure blue flames.

Two years later, she’s happy. But happy never lasts…

After moving to Idaho to live with her grandparents, Jasmine has a new life. Almost nobody knows about her powers, and she’s just a normal teenager with normal problems. Then comes her eighteenth birthday—and the earthquake that changes her world forever.

An army of demons rise from Hell. And Jasmine is right in the middle of the battle…

When demons claw their way to Earth, Jasmine is surrounded by hundreds of fire-eyed beasts. Worse, she is captured by a big-shot demon named Bael. He’s a tricky foe with a chip on his shoulder—and the desire to make Jasmine use her powers for evil.

Amon is a fallen angel with an attitude—and everything to lose.

Successfully escaping the underworld undetected, Amon is on a quest to regain God’s grace when he rescues Jasmine from the clutches of a particularly nasty demon he knows all too well. The attraction between him and the not-entirely-human captive is instantaneous. Heavenly sparks fly, but ideas of romance will have to wait. First they have to stop the demon race from wiping out the mortal realm. Humanity’s fate rests in their hands.

Can two troubled angels rise above the flames to ensure a future for mankind? Or will Jasmine and Amon’s souls be bound together—in hell?

*May Contain Spoilers*

Many years ago, Heaven and Hell made a deal. If Hell could take down Heaven, then the demons of Hell would be free to try to take over the Earth in 100 days or less. To ensure a second option, five children were chosen to carry Angelic powers in hopes that one day they'd be ready to fight for Earth after Heaven was defeated. That time is now in Cassandra Fear's novel Above the Flames

The main characters include Jasmine, Amon, and Bael. All with incredibly different personalities, goals, and histories. Jasmine is a teenage girl who doesn't understand her powers or herself. She's a bit lost while feelings of unfairness and uncertainty swirl within her. She's also a cranky angsty teenager who loves to say 'fan-fricking-tastic,' which is an infixing I could do without. But she is brave, courageous, and loyal when she isn't being snappy and sarcastic. Readers will understand her reluctance at being a hero to the world. Fighting demons is scary business and Fear doesn't shy away from gruesome details. Readers will also connect with Jasmine emotionally after she loses her father, her mother, and both of her grandparents. Though there's more to lose in the 100 days of bloodshed.

Amon is a fallen angel who spent quite a long time in Hell. Now that he's escaped with the rest of the demons, he's ready to make them pay with help from his friends. Amon is a little behind the times and that adds a side of humor to the book. It also garners the vote of confidence from readers. His admiration for Jasmine is genuine and I think readers will root for their relationship, if she can ever realize that he's truly helpful, strong, and caring.

Bael is the bad guy, second in charge of Hell, kneeling only to Lucifer. Readers will hate him with a passion. He's horrid and fighting on the wrong side of readers. Bael is sort of intelligent yet malicious, jealous, and emotionless. Fear writes him as the perfect villain, but we haven't gotten to see what Lucifer has planned, so maybe he'll come in second on that list as well.

The plot beings with Jasmine's father dying during a demon encounter then flashes forward two years. Hell has beaten Heaven and it's time to scorch the Earth. Amon and his fallen angels make contact with Jasmine and two other Angel Blessed (humans blessed with Angelic powers). They decide to join together to defeat the demons. Meanwhile, Bael tries to kidnap all of the Angel Blessed in order to convert them to his side. Bloodshed is bountiful as angel faces demon in this supernatural showdown. And it's only the beginning as this is the first in a trilogy. The storyline keeps the interest of readers while Fear sets up the war, but I hope in the future books Jasmine grows into a more level-headed character who isn't so quick to anger. I fear it may be her Achilles' heel.

Caged Lightning (Wyatt Stryker #1)

27135826Like an arrow in the hand of a warrior, so are the sons of those who have been shaken. Hurl lightning bolts and scatter them. Shoot your arrows and rout them. King David, circa 1000 BC

When ex-Navy Seal, Wyatt Striker, returns from a trip to Mexico, where he had nearly taken a bullet to the head during a seemingly common break-in, he discovers his sister-in-law tied to a chair in the kitchen, his son gone, and a ransom note. His intuition and training lead the way as he tries to outsmart the captor, who, unknown to Wyatt, is a deadly assassin bent on luring him into a weak position.

In this fast-paced action adventure, Brent Russell weaves a tapestry of mystery, suspense, and good-old-fashioned fight scenes described in a uniquely thrilling voice.

*May Contain Spoilers*

Holy action, Batman! I'm not sure I've ever read a book with so much thrilling suspense as Brent Rock Russell's Caged Lightning. It definitely reminds me of Alexander McNabb's novels but with an ex-Navy SEAL and U.S. soil. The surprises start from the get-go and Russell does not let up until the Epilogue. Each chapter leads directly into the next with no time for the reader to catch their breath.

Wyatt Stryker is the main character of this novel and the forthcoming series. His intelligence is immense. He's an ER doctor who has had military SEAL training. Wyatt is brave, courageous, and extreme while also being a bit terrifying. The plans he comes up with in this novel are truly scary. Readers will be impressed with his skill set and initiative. Wyatt's son and family are the main connection between readers and his character. He'll do anything for his son. And I do mean anything. Taking out an entire drug cartel is just the beginning. Readers will be sympathetic and scared for Wyatt after his life is put in jeopardy and his son is kidnapped. Though it's tough to connect with Wyatt through his worklife and military training for most readers as we've never been through that, Russell does a good job at writing Wyatt with a relatable family life and likeable personality.

The plot of Caged Lightning is intense and revolves around the fact that Wyatt Stryker must be killed to create a gap in the protection of a state senator so that he, in turn, can be taken out. Wyatt manages to escape the bullet labeled with his name, but he has no idea how a drug cartel, a senator, and his family triangulate. Though complicated, the truth does come out, after heavy interrogation not for readers with a sensitive stomach. Russell's writing style is gruesomely detailed. Caged Lightning was an action-packed novel, almost to the point of being unbelievable. I don't imagine two men could take down an entire drug cartel army, but I have heard crazier stories and Russell makes it pretty convincing.

Chasing Chaos (Entanglement Series #3)

29336837Daphne Saito, a beautiful and talented Hollywood screenwriter, might look like she has the perfect life, but on the inside she’s lost. She’s wandered from one meaningless relationship to the next—and now, just as she breaks up with her longtime boyfriend, Dan—she finds herself facing someone new, someone she could fall in love with. But Daphne, still traumatized by an accident involving her best friend, Greta, five years earlier, is afraid to love. Harm has always come to those close to her.

Over five life-changing days, Daphne lets her guard down and steps toward this new love. But trouble is never far behind. Dan, angry at Daphne’s departure, has targeted an innocent young woman, someone close to Daphne’s new love, as part of a plan for revenge. And an enigmatic woman from Daphne’s past returns with revenge plans of her own. Danger is on the horizon for all of Daphne’s friends—and for her.

*May Contain Spoilers*

It's been a few months since I've read a book that made me lose all track of time like this one did in. Chasing Chaos, by Katie Rose Guest Pryal, is a whirlwind of bad luck, boyfriends, and blame. Daphne may have a big heart and lots of love, but she doesn't believe it's anything she deserves.

Daphne has not had an easy life. She's hiding some deep scars when it comes to her family life and growing up. Readers will definitely understand her fear of being loved or cared for. She believes that if her father couldn't love her, then how could anyone else? Daphne is a wandering soul who blames herself for every bad thing that happens to the people around her. She's beautiful and intelligent and a gifted writer but she only sees the bad in herself. A sympathetic and empathetic connection will be sparked between readers and her character, but I'm not sure how strong that connection will become. I feel some readers will completely take Daphne's side and support her through her crazy plan, that (thankfully) doesn't go off the deep end. But I feel that other readers will think Daphne's become a little too unhinged. I was definitely annoyed when she thought running and staying away from everyone she loved would keep them safe. Unless you're being targeted by the mob, I don't think that's necessary.

The other characters definitely helped build a repertoire between the cast and the reader. Sandy was funny and sweet. Greta was a tough workaholic with a big heart. Carrie was by far the most naive while Miranda was razor sharp around the edges. And Marlon, the love interest. Handyman meets carpenter meets artist. He's careful, thoughtful, and loving. Though a bit hot-headed where his family is concerned.

The plot of Chasing Chaos is exactly what it sounds like. It seems to Daphne that Chaos has always dictated her life and now she's the cause of someone's death. When her best friend, Greta, announces she's getting married, Daphne has three days to put together a wedding. And, holy mackerel, can a lot happen in three days. As the novel progresses, each character and situation sets up perfectly, like a line of dominoes. Then the day of the wedding arrives and Greta walks down the aisle, as they all fall into each other, creating a mess that will take more than a broom to clean up.
