A Job From Hell

In a world of love bonds, rituals, dark magic, ancient enemies and immortals, nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted.

Seventeen-year-old Amber enters the paranormal world by chance when her brother, Dallas, sets her up with a summer job in Scotland. Dallas has spied something in the woods he thinks could make them rich beyond their wildest dreams. But instead of finding riches, Amber unknowingly enters a paranormal race—and promptly wins the first prize—a prize for which many would kill. Soon, she discovers her new boss, Aidan, didn’t employ her for her astounding housekeeping skills and he isn't who he claims to be either.

As the dark forces slowly conspire against Amber, her naivety and love for Aidan catapults her into a calamitous series of otherworldly events. With every immortal creature hunting for her, whom can she trust with her life?

Jayde Scott introduces Amber to the paranormal world in her novel, A Job From Hell. With a boss who's a vampire things can get tricky, especially when he, Aidan, falls in love with her, realizing she's his mate. It gets even more chaotic when she accidentally enters a race and wins -- gaining the Gift of Sight. This "gift" allows her to see ghosts and spirits. It also allows her to enter the Otherworld.

Amber is a great character, but hard to connect with. She's hilarious, witty, sarcastic, and blunt. Which makes for great dialogue! But readers will have a hard time connecting to her based on those attributes. Though she's noble, willing to travel to the Otherworld to save Aidan, she's unspecific with her feelings about him often flipping back and forth between love and dislike. It was hard for me to find anything concrete or substantial on which to form a connection with Amber.

I loved the story line of Scott's novel: an ancient race, lore rules, a mortal accidentally finding herself in the middle of it, but it was hard to follow at times. There were so many characters, each with their own paranormal background, that it was difficult to keep them all straight. On top of that, the dialogue was so full of wit and banter that it drew away from what was actually happening.

I almost wish that this story was split into multiple volumes instead of the Ancient Legend series moving on to various characters. I feel I would have formed a stronger bond with Amber and been able to follow the story line more closely.
