Morning Light

17713996Emily, a twenty-four-year-old dancer and choreographer, confronts her husband's fixation with right-wing Catholic dogma that condemns her use of birth control. His faith is so powerful that he refuses to have sex with her, even though he desperately wants to. As awful as this broken faith feels, she is troubled more by her best friend's losing fight with cancer, and seeks to help her friend's grief-stricken, precocious, son-the seventeen-year-old David.

But the boy's willful ways turn the tables on her. Denied intimacy by her husband, the boy's passion asserts itself, and everyone's life is explosively altered. Twenty years later, the successful David, a theater director, gets his hands on Emily's secret journals and uncovers her covert emotional life, revealing family secrets unknown to him, and discovering prickly truths about himself.

Part literary memoir, part poignant psychological drama, this haunting love story explores the secrets of attraction and the mysteries of obsession-a boy's coming-of-age, and one woman's search for love and success in a year of intense achievement and painful loss.

*May Contain Spoilers*

Morning Light by Holland Kane is an unexpected religious romance full of discovery, doubt, and deep secrets. David tells the story as an outsider, twenty years after it happened, though he plays a large part in the plot. When Emily, the main character, gives David her journals from the past, he shares them with the reader, adding insight and details from his point of view.

Emily is a hopeful dancer who lets infatuation and love carry her through life. She's completely in love with her husband, but when he removes sexuality from their marriage it condemns Emily to searching for physical love with David, a seventeen year old. Though Emily isn't open in life - she's in fact very secretive - she's open with readers. As David shares her journal entries, readers become members of Emily's inner mind. Readers will connect with her through empathy and understanding. As a young woman, she yearns for life lasting love.

The novel is set up as a memoir, though it's easy to forget while reading that the narrator is looking back while telling the story. Readers follow Emily through a year that held her defining moments. She becomes pregnant, her dance/choreography career takes off, all while trying to hold her marriage together. Though religion plays a huge role in the story line, it isn't overwhelming. It's a common thread throughout that holds the pieces and players together. When the weight of the characters become to much, the thread snaps and the story crumbles into chaos.

Morning Light is a hindsight novel where the worst outcome is always on the horizon. A ploy of Murphy's law that will leave readers feeling inept.

Dancing With the Duke

Dancing with the Duke (Landing a Lord #0.5)She's loved him for years...
Charlotte Grant can't remember a time when she didn't love her best friend's older brother.

He's never noticed her...
The Duke of Clarington hadn't spared a thought for his sister's friend in years.

Their situations are about to be reversed...
It is the beginning of a new Season and Clarington intends to stay away from all the young ladies and eager mamas hoping to ensnare a duke. But that plan falls into tatters when his mother sponsors his sister's friend and enlists him to dance with her at Almack's. The beautiful vixen he meets that night bears little resemblance to the shy, gangly girl who used to follow him around. Now, instead of avoiding Charlotte, he finds himself frustrated when she seems to notice everyone but him.

*May Contain Spoilers*

As a prequel novella to a series, Dancing With the Duke by Suzanna Medeiros sets the stage for future installments. Charlotte and Alex were childhood acquaintances and now that they're all grown up, Charlotte is determined to catch Alex as her husband.

Charlotte and Alex are likeable enough for readers to complete the novella, but because of the short nature of the book, it's quite difficult to make any true connections. Charlotte, in her childhood, was a blushing, shy, gangly girl. Now she's grown into a beautiful young woman who has learned confidence and self-esteem. These traits are perfect for a foundation of character connection, but not enough to fully form a bond with readers.

Readers don't learn much about Alex, except that he isn't ready to marry until he sets his eyes on Charlotte for the first time in seven years. He has high morals and loves his family. Again, two good traits to build a connection on. I truly think that this prequel deserves novel-length and more character evolution. Medeiros has set up a wonderful romance but doesn't deliver the satisfying story evolution that she could have.

The Clock of Life

The Clock Of LifeIn the small town of Hadlee, Mississippi, during the 1980's, Jason Lee Rainey struggles to find his way amongst the old, steadfast Southern attitudes about race, while his friendship with a black boy, Samson Johnson, deepens.

By way of stories from others, Jason Lee learns about his larger-than-life father, who was killed in Vietnam.

He longs to become that sort of man, but doesn't believe he has it in him.
In The Clock Of Life he learns lessons from the past, and the realities of inequality. He flourishes with the bond of friendship; endures the pain of senseless death; finds the courage to stand up for what he believes is right; and comes to realize he is his father's son.

This story explores how two unsettling chapters in American history, the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, affect the fate of a family, a town, and two boyhood friends.

*May Contain Spoilers*

Undoubtedly the best historical fiction novel I have ever read, The Clock of Life by Nancy Klann-Moren surprised and astounded me. I've never been one for history, but this book completely captured my heart as well as my attention.

Jason Lee, with a heart that holds so much love and strength, is the main character in this Southern novel . His moral compass is something to be jealous of and his urge to make the world a better place is remarkable. Readers watch him grow into a man as the pages turn, while the connection with Jason Lee flourishes in the sadness of his waning innocence. His bravery, hope, and faith are overflowing, even in the darkest times, making him a character to be remembered.

The plot follows Jason Lee and his loss of innocence when he learns that his friendship with an African American isn't "normal." This doesn't stop him from becoming blood brothers with Samson, sharing his hopes and dreams for the future. The story of their friendship is heartwarming, yet also heartbreaking. Nancy Klann-Moren has created a must-read novel that will touch the hearts of readers with The Clock of Life.

Get Me Out of Here

421518Borderline Personality Disorder. "What the hell was that?" raged Rachel Reiland when she read the diagnosis written in her medical chart. As the 29-year old accountant, wife, and mother of young children would soon discover, it was the diagnosis that finally explained her explosive anger, manipulative behaviors, and self-destructive episodes- including bouts of anorexia, substance abuse, and sexual promiscuity. With astonishing honesty, Reiland's memoir reveals what mental illness feels like and looks like from the inside, and how healing from such a devastating disease is possible through intensive therapy and the support of loved ones.

*May Contain Spoilers*

Get Me Out of Here by Rachel Reiland is a mental illness memoir that shakes the core of it's readers. As Rachel realizes that she's about to hit rock bottom, she takes a chance on therapy as a last effort to save herself.

As Rachel suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder, it's hard to connect with certain personality traits because they are from her illness. She's moody, angry, aggressive, and spiteful. But simultaneously, she is a loving mother, gratuitous, giving, and brave. Through the ups and downs of her disease, the four years that are roughly documented in this memoir bring readers in and let them experience not only what Borderline Personality Disorder is, but also what it's like from the outside. The explosions she has, the moments when she can't control herself, and the discussion that stems from them is eye-opening. Some readers will have a hard time relating to Rachel, but I think the number of those that do will be surprising.

This memoir documents Rachel's journey from the depths of her illness, through therapy, to the life she's never imagined. Though the memoir does jump around a few times, the plot moves in a linear direction, making it easy to keep up with where Rachel is in her journey. I think this novel will touch readers and help them to understand what it's like to live with an illness. Definitely helpful for those who are living with, or know, someone with a mental illness.

Pieces of Lies

Pieces of Lies (Pieces of Lies, #1)Passionately driven artist, Norah Ross, has been banished from New York to Morewell for her final semester of graphic design at McLaren University. Her move allows her to reconnect with Josh, her best friend, who is more then thrilled at Norah's appearance back into his life.

At the same time that Norah steps back into Josh's heart, she learns that he is in the process of being accepted into McLaren's uber exclusive secret society, the 'Lappell'. Josh takes Norah to the Lappell's glamorous parties in the hope of taking their friendship to the next level, but when Norah meets the handsome and elusive Clint Weston, a leader in the Lappell, he sweeps her off her feet in more ways then one.

Norah quickly becomes caught up in an emotional tug-of-war between the two guys while also trying to deal with her own secrets that follow her every day. When Norah's past begins to intertwine with her present, what unfolds is a series of dramatic events filled with romance, mystery and dark motivations. She quickly realizes the path to real love can be paved in all kinds of lies.

*May Contain Spoilers*

Angela Richardson brushes the cobwebs away, offering up the unveiling of terrifying secrets in her novel, Pieces of Lies. Everyone has a secret as Norah, Josh, and Clint try to survive the Lappell, who have been known to stop at nothing to get what they want.

Norah Ross, the main character, is an artist who uses her emotions and painful past as inspiration. She's passionate and full of life, brave yet terrified, open to love but closed off to her deeper self. Norah has a haunting past that she tries to escape when she leaves New York City. As it threatens to catch up to her, readers will begin to connect with this girl who's too afraid to even be herself. The heartbroken foundation that readers are introduced to will be the first step in a strong connection. Familial complications will draw readers into her life, asking questions that will lead them deeper into Norah's psyche. Her chance at happiness will have hope blooming in the hearts of readers while her troubled nature will keep their interest piqued.

The plot is a combination of story lines that will entangle readers. The secret society plot brings mystery and danger to the novel while Norah's struggle with her romantic interests provides much more than mere entertainment. Pieces of Lies sets a good pace while still keeping certain secrets behind the curtain, pulling readers forward. Richardson does a good job at crafting a story centered around the shattering of secrets without giving them all away in the first act.

Revenant in Training

Revenant in Training (Blood and Snow, #2)Snow has become something not quite human. She must discover how to live with the changes, hopefully without killing anyone.

*May Contain Spoilers*

In the first novella of the Blood and Snow series by RaShelle Workman, readers learned that there's a Vampire Queen looking for her next host to live out the coming 1,000 years. Snow White has been chosen as one of the hosts and when this installment ends, she's been bitten. Now, she's officially a revenant in the second novella, Revenant in Training

As she begins to turn into a vampire she begins craving blood. She only has one main rule: never feed from the same person twice, which doesn't seem like it'll come easy to Snow. Readers learn more about Snow in this installment, slowly giving life to a reader/character connection. While the first novella focused on clumsiness and teenage crush, readers now gain another trait: bravery. Snow is thrown into this supernatural world where she's suddenly becoming a vampire and training to be a revenant. Yes, her fear and uncertainty is depicted but she does pretty well accepting everything that's going on. Perhaps it's just her bloodlust taking over...?

The plot expands as readers find out that the doctor next door is a vampire and worked to help the Vampire Queen pick her future bodies. Now, he protects the innocent girls, which includes Snow. Readers also learn that the doctor is going to attempt to kill the Queen and Snow just might be the secret weapon. The story line is definitely interesting but the character connection still doesn't seem strong enough.
