Jennifer Laurens takes the paranormal idea of immortality and adds a realistic, scientific twist in her novel, Grace Doll. As a 17-year-old model/actress/wife, Grace is at the mercy of her husband who wants her to stay young, beautiful, and alive forever.
Readers will enjoy both of the main characters of Grace Doll, Brendan and Grace/Katherine. Brendan is the son of Grace's friend, Jonathan, who upon his death gave Brendan the antidote for Grace's immortality. They meet after Brendan is given the task of delivering the antidote to Grace. Brendon is the typical good-guy teenager. He's sweet, thoughtful, and considerate. Readers will not only like him, but connect with him based on his relationship with his parents. The story of his parents lives, and deaths, will touch the hearts of readers.
Grace Doll is a wonderful character, stuck at the mindset of 17. She's scared though strong, secure yet uncertain, and full of love she has never had the opportunity to share. Not to mention, she's ready to stop hiding. She longs to stand up to Rufus, her controlling husband who she ran away from 70 years prior, and she longs for a chance at a real life -- one that the antidote can give her. Readers will connect with her desires and hopes for the rest of her life.
The plot was delicately woven. Though full of immortality and fantasy, the book is weighted in science and that gives readers a new sort of avenue in which to explore their own creativity. I love when authors give their novels a background that is believable. It makes the readers doubt the fantasy aspect. And what's more wonderful than that? Definitely recommended for a nice, enjoyable, yet nail-biting read. =)
