Where You Least Expect (Thornehill Springs #1)

24621312Navy SEAL Joe MacDermid came to Thornehill Springs, North Carolina seeking peace and quiet and maybe a break from his hectic life. But his next-door neighbor Verna Love seems intent on making sure he doesn’t get any of either.

Verna takes pride in being a nice person, but when it comes to Joe, she just can’t help herself. Getting under his skin gives her an unexplainable satisfaction, and it doesn’t hurt that Joe is the picture of masculine perfection, especially when he’s angry. She’s smart enough to know that he’d never be interested in her, not with all her flaws, but she can’t pretend that goading him isn’t one of the highlights of her day.

But when circumstances force the two of them together, they might find love where they least expect.

Lydia Rowan doesn't hold back in this for-adults-only romance entitled, Where You Least Expect. First in the Thornehill series, this book focuses on Joe and Verna, two people who aren't too sure where their lives are headed, but it does seem they'll get there together, even if sparks fly when they battle wits.

Verna Love is a nice woman who's uncomfortable in her own skin. She's also about to turn thirty and has never followed her dreams. A lot of readers will be able to relate to Verna because she's written realistically. She has problems, she struggles, but she wants change. However, when it comes to Joe, Verna isn't so nice, nor is she respectable. Verna makes it a point to dig at Joe, call him on his B.S., and she enjoys doing it. She thinks by doing so, she won't be so intimidated by him... and though that helps, she can't push Joe away too far because he's the one who's going to help her change her life.

Joe MacDermaid is a Navy SEAL who's at a crossroads. He's past his prime and, though he can keep up with the younger guys, he doesn't really want to anymore. Realistically, what else would he do if he wasn't operating in missions? Joe has no idea and this detail makes him relatable to readers. Everyone hits a point where they're uncertain of their next step, so even though many readers haven't been a Navy SEAL, they can still relate. Joe is a good, decent, guy. He's healthy, worries a little too much, and can't seem to stop Verna from getting under his skin.

The plot makes this novel a quick, entertaining, easy read. Verna rents her friends house which is right next door to Joe, and although Joe thinks it will be the worst thing in history, it turns out being the best. Verna and Joe begin an uncertain relationship but each has their own problem to attend to. Verna wants to follow her dream of being a clothes designer for the people around town while Joe must decide if he's ready to step back from active SEAL duties. Where You Least Expect was a book I flew through in a few hours. It's steamy, blunt, and has a lot of cursing. For readers who enjoy sexy romances with a side of stories, this book is for you.
